
Bad North features real-time fighting similar to Northgard but with a smaller space to duke it out and a much faster pace. It seems like there's a roguelike out there for everything nowadays, and Viking traditions are no different. Be careful, though: Stamina and precision play a large role in each fight you can't just jump in and start swinging against an experienced player. If you're up for carrying the Vikings to victory, you can load in as a front-line loving Raider, unshakable Warlord, dual-wielding Berserker or fierce Valkyrie and rip apart the Knights or Samurai that stand before you. The game features intricate player-vs.-player combat with a complex blocking system and different character classes that allow you to approach each battle in different ways. Another Ubisoft title, For Honor is less lore, more gore. This is one of those Viking-adjacent ones. The game is also on sale for half off at $17.49 in the Nintendo Switch shop until May 12. With unique elements like annual passing of winters and cataclysmic events that force players to react as well as NPC encounters as you try to expand your empire, Northgard is a new experience each time out and the crown jewel of indie developer Shinro Games. Even with a story mode to show you the ropes, Northgard bears a steep-but-rewarding learning curve with a StarCraft-but-slower feel to it. Players must determine what is real and what isn't along the way in a game that's been nearly universally praised by critics and user reviewers on Steam. Here are a few games that come to mind if you're interested in exploring some Nordic battles, lore and pillaging in the meantime, too. I'm a big fan of anything that's tangled up in Norse mythology, and seeing the trailer gave me an itch to pick up something at least Viking-adjacent while waiting for the Holiday 2020 release window for Valhalla. Developer Ubisoft is the king of amazing trailers that lead into so-so games, but it's tough not to get pumped for this Assassin's Creed rendition. Valhalla, at first glance, is a really nice departure from the series' city-bound roots. Viking games to tide you over until Assassin's Creed: ValhallaĪssassin's Creed: Valhalla might be just what the series needs to jump into the next-gen era.
